Moose!

Shocker!  I heard a slight noise and looked out the kitchen window on a recent summer morning to see this large creature ambling along the flagstone walk in front of the house and over to the fire pit area. I got a second video showing it walking toward the back of the property. Seemingly fully grown and typically gangly in its gait, the moose was in no hurry and paused a while to gaze over the creek, then try out a birch branch.

Well, I never thought moose came this far into southern Ontario… to my knowledge, this is quite an unusual event, not unique, but rare. When I texted neighbour Patti “when was the last time you saw a moose on our property?”, she answered “Never! How much did you have to drink last night?”  Although one of the local residents insists moose are all over the nearby cabbage fields, I’ve not seen one in the fifty plus years we’ve been in the area.
These are unsteady pics, but definitely show the young moose. On video 2, I was holding my arm around and beyond a tree, so the camera had a better view than I did, but when I noticed the moose look in my direction, I skedaddled back to the safety of the house. Later, I walked to the woods where the moose had headed, but no sign except some hoof prints. Just as well, I imagine…  I found out later that moose weigh at least 270 kilos at the smallest. Since they can run up to 35 mph and any leg can kick in any direction, it’s a good thing I vamoosed out of there! (sorry, could not resist…)
